High power connectors for aircraft

Aiming at aircraft, Powell Electronics is offering high power connectors and cables from Glenair.

Powell Glenair 972 high power connector

The 972 series is designed for up to 2kVac, 1,500Hz and between 150 and 800A.

With stainless steel bodies and shells, “the connectors feature a +230°C maximum operating temperature”, according to component distributor Powell, which added that rope-lay cables optimised for the connectors are available at gauges from 8AWG to 4/0 in “ultra-flexible configurations with ruggedised Duralectric or FEP jacketing”.

Passivated and electrodeposited nickel are the finishing options for stainless steel metalwork. Aluminium shell versions are also available if a lower maximum temperature can be tolerated. The can be finished in electroless nickel, nickel-PTFE, cadmium or black zinc-nickel.

Applications are foreseen in high-frequency commercial aircraft as well as emerging eVTOL platforms.

As an example, 972-102Z128-3A1-LB (not pictured) is a wall-mount receptacle with a banding platform and compression grommet and passivated stainless steel housing parts.

It has three positions for 2AWG pin contacts (supplied separately) for 12mm diameter conductor. keying is style ‘1’ of six possibilities, and a back-shell must be ordered separately. To give an idea of size: The square flange of this size-28 connector measures 50.8mm across – the range is size-16 (~32.5mm) to size 40 (~70mm).
