We caught up with Siraj Shaikh, Professor in Systems Security at Swansea University, as part of our promotional coverage for the 2024 Siemens Technology Day. Siraj discusses the role of academia in pushing the frontiers of knowledge, presenting a neutral playground for a lot of new ideas. And how it is well placed to work with a range of industry partners to realise how modern industrial technologies could best become part of road vehicles.. He covers, for example, how the Global Automotive Advisory Council (GAAC) - which represents semiconductor industries and also automotive industry players - provides a forum for thought leadership, to explore new emerging ideas. Vehicles have to be increasingly connected and also increasingly complex, he highlights, and they are also increasingly carrying the electronics and software in different configurations that come together to form even more complex systems... The security of an automotive is becoming a substantial challenge. Siemens tech Day: Video – Automotive ecosystems, Design-for-test, Reliability

12 October 2024

We caught up with Heiko Dudek of Siemens EDA as part of our promotional coverage for the 2024 Siemens Technology Day. Heiko discusses why reliability is a critical aspect in automotive design, and why you have really have to plan reliability upfront. He discusses, for example, how the most important aspect for the European automotive industry going forward is the formation of ecosystems. These are mostly being driven by Research and Technology Organisations (Imec, Fraunhofer, and Leti) and all these projects require an EDA partner - you need a software platform that you can develop the ecosystem on. Also, why design-for-test is important when you are combining silicon from multiple sources. Even if you have known good chiplets and you combine them in an architecture on a substrate it doesn't mean it is necessarily going to work or work forever. Thank you to Heiko for his time. https://eda.sw.siemens.com/en-US/ic/tessent/safety-security/ https://www.electronicsweekly.com/tag/siemens-eda/ Video: Priya Atwal, emap

Cellular IoT will play an important role for connecting billions of devices

3 December 2018

With the growth of IoT and M2M technologies, Cellular IoT will play an important role for connecting billions of devices requiring low power consumption, low data-rates, long range and low cost features. Cellular Iot (LTE CATM1NBIoT) are designed to serve a wide range of vertical industries and applications such as utilities, agriculture, manufacturing, wearables and transport. In these environments, the huge numbers of connected devices can only be supported if communications are efficient and power costs low. Data transfer rates of LPWAN are very low, as is the power consumption of connected devices. LPWAN enables connectivity for devices networks that require less bandwidth than what the standard home equipment provides. Therefore, networks can also support more devices over a larger coverage area than consumer mobile technologies. Furthermore, LPWANs can operate at a lower cost, with greater power efficiency. 3-axis inclination sensor with digital interface and output available in degrees

3 December 2018

SCL3300 series products have high resolution digital interface. This enables advanced signal processing and no high performance AD-converter is required for high performance system. SCL3300 series products are measuring inclination to 3 sensing axis directions. This enables complete freedom of assembly orientation for customer product. All measurement directions can be covered with a single high performance inclinometer, compared to single or dual axis sensors which require matching to customer module design and end usage. In addition to conventional digital acceleration output, SCL3300 product family has output data as angle in degrees. Having the angle conversion inside sensor enables simple, robust SW for the customers and reduces the engineering work on customer side. SCL3300 has the same or improved performance compared to market leading SCA61T and SCA100T inclinometers in smaller package and further developed interface to support various customer needs. SCL3300 enables lower system power consumption and smaller system size. Twitter Handle: https://twitter.com/MurataEurope Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MurataElectr... Cellular IoT will play an important role for connecting billions of devices

13 November 2018

Beyond holograms: Star Wars-inspired 3D images float in free space

24 January 2018

“This display is like a 3D printer for light. You’re actually printing an object in space with these little particles.” - Daniel Smalley, #BYU electrical engineering professor. BYU engineers have developed a technique for creating a full-color 3D graphic display that can float in free space and is visible from any angle. Inspired by the displays of science fiction--most notably the iconic Star Wars' Princess Leia projection--the new Optical Trap Display (OTD) technique, creates a 3D volumetric image by trapping and illuminating a particle with a laser, and then scanning the image in free space. Unlike a hologram, a volumetric image is created in free-space and is visible from any angle. BYU electrical engineering professor Daniel Smalley and co-authors publish their research ("A photophoretic-trap volumetric display') in the January 24, 2018, issue of the journal Nature. Media inquires please contact Todd Hollingshead (toddh@byu.edu) Video produced by BYU University Communications: Julie Walker (producer); Brian Wilcox (DP), Hannah Hansen (editor) Copyright BYU Special thanks to the films that inspired the research: Star Wars (courtesy 20th Century Fox and LucasFilm) Avatar (courtesy 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment) Iron Man (courtesy Marvel Studios, The Walt Disney Studios) All rights retained by the copyright holders News release from Todd Hollingshead, Brigham Young University: See: http://bit.ly/2n7A9sh Better than a hologram: BYU study produces 3D images that float in thin air Photophoretic-trap volumetric display produces full-color graphics in free space In the original Star Wars film, R2D2 projects an image of Princess Leia in distress. The iconic scene includes the line still famous 40 years later: “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.” BYU engineering professor and holography expert Daniel Smalley has long had a goal to create the same type of 3D image projection. In a paper published this week in Nature, Smalley details the method he has developed to do so. “We refer to this colloquially as the Princess Leia project,” Smalley said. “Our group has a mission to take the 3D displays of science fiction and make them real. We have created a display that can do that.” First things, first, Smalley says. The image of Princess Leia is not what people think it is: It’s not a hologram. A 3D image that floats in air, that you can walk all around and see from every angle, is actually called a volumetric image. Examples of volumetric images include the 3D displays Tony Stark interacts with in Ironman or the massive image-projecting table in Avatar. A holographic display scatters light only at a 2D surface. If you aren’t looking at that surface you won’t see the 3D image because you must be looking at the scattering surface to see the image. A volumetric display has little scattering surfaces scattered throughout a 3D space — the same space occupied by the 3D image — so if you are looking at the image you’re are also looking at the scatters. For this reason, a volumetric image can be seen from any angle. Smalley and his coauthors have devised a free -space volumetric display platform, based on photophoretic optical trapping, that produces full-color, aerial volumetric images with 10-micron image points by persistence of vision. “We’re using a laser beam to trap a particle, and then we can steer the laser beam around to move the particle and create the image,” said undergrad coauthor Erich Nygaard. Smalley said the easiest way to understand what they are doing is to think about the images they create like 3D-printed objects. “This display is like a 3D printer for light,” Smalley said. “You’re actually printing an object in space with these little particles.” So far Smalley and his student researchers have 3D light printed a butterfly, a prism, the stretch-Y BYU logo, rings that wrap around an arm and an individual in a lab coat crouched in a position similar to Princess Leia as she begins her projected message. While previous researchers outside of BYU have done related work to create volumetric imagery, the Smalley team is the first to use optical trapping and color effectively. Their method of trapping particles and illuminating it with colorful lasers you can see is novel. “We’re providing a method to make a volumetric image that can create the images we imagine we’ll have in the future,” Smalley said.

Ford Exoskeleton Technology (EksoVest)

9 November 2017

http://www.Motorward.com - Subscribe For More Cool Videos: https://goo.gl/2nkv2Z Putting dishes on a high shelf or changing an overhead lightbulb occasionally might not be difficult, but could you imagine performing either of these tasks 4,600 times per day? How about 1 million times a year? These are the approximate number of times some Ford assembly line workers lift their arms during overhead work tasks. At this rate, the possibility of fatigue or injury on the body increases significantly. But a new upper body exoskeletal tool – the result of a partnership between Ford and California-based Ekso Bionics – helps lessen the chance of injury. “My job entails working over my head, so when I get home my back, neck and shoulders usually hurt,” said Paul Collins, an assembly line worker at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant. “Since I started using the vest, I’m not as sore, and I have more energy to play with my grandsons when I get home.” Called EksoVest, the wearable technology elevates and supports a worker’s arms while performing overhead tasks. It can be fitted to support workers ranging from 5 feet tall to 6 feet 4 inches tall, and provides adjustable lift assistance of five pounds to 15 pounds per arm. It’s comfortable to wear because it’s lightweight, it isn’t bulky, and it allows workers to move their arms freely. Designed and built for dynamic, real-world environments like factories, construction sites and distribution centers, the non-powered vest offers protection and support against fatigue and injury by reducing the stress and strain of high-frequency, long-duration activities that can take a toll on the body over time. “Collaboratively working with Ford enabled us to test and refine early prototypes of the EksoVest based on insights directly from their production line workers,” said Russ Angold, co-founder and chief technology officer of Ekso Bionics. “The end result is a wearable tool that reduces the strain on a worker’s body, reducing the likelihood of injury, and helping them feel better at the end of the day – increasing both productivity and morale.” With support from the United Automobile Workers and Ford, EksoVest is being piloted in two U.S. plants, with plans to test in other regions, including Europe and South America. “The health and safety of our membership has always been our highest priority,” said UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles. “With the proven success at the piloted locations, we look forward to expanding this technology to our other UAW-Ford manufacturing facilities.” EksoVest is the latest example of advanced technology Ford is using to reduce the physical toll on employees during the vehicle assembly process. Between 2005 and 2016, the most recent full year of data, the company saw an 83 percent decrease in the number of incidents that resulted in days away, work restrictions or job transfers – to an all-time low of 1.55 incidents per 100 full-time North American employees.

Jupiter icy moons radar test

26 September 2017

A 16 m-long radar boom that is part of ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer was tested with the help of a helicopter close to Friedrichshafen, Germany, on 20–21 September 2017. The Radar for Icy Moons Exploration instrument will probe below the surface of Jupiter’s icy moons using ice-penetrating radar. In order to measure key antenna characteristics, and to verify computer simulations, a test was carried out using a simplified mock-up of the spacecraft, simplified solar arrays and a representative antenna. The model spacecraft hung 150 m below the helicopter and flew trajectories between 50m and 320 m above the ground. The tests were performed with the antenna and solar array in horizontal and vertical orientation with respect to the spacecraft, to understand the interaction between the spacecraft components and the antenna, and to test the characteristics of the returned signals. I later found out that the clock is called 'Real Time' and was created by Dutch designer Maarten Baas, who is the man in blue overalls. It took him 12 hours to film.

IBM Scientists Invent a Thermometer for the Nanoscale

3 March 2016

The IBM lab responsible for inventing both the scanning tunneling microscope and the atomic force microscope has invented another critical tool for helping us understand the nanoworld. Accurately measuring the temperature of objects at the nanoscale has been challenging scientists for decades. Current techniques are not accurate and they typically generate artifacts, limiting their reliability. Motivated by this challenge and their need to precisely characterize the temperature of new transistor designs to meet the demand of future cognitive computers, scientists in Switzerland from IBM and ETH Zurich have invented a breakthrough technique to measure the temperature of nano- and macro-sized objects. The patent-pending invention is being disclosed for the first time today in the peer-review journal Nature Communications, "Temperature mapping of operating nanoscale devices by scanning probe thermometry."

Algorithm allows robot to fall gracefully

13 October 2015

Researchers at Georgia Tech have identified a way to teach robots how to fall with grace and without serious injury. In the video, the top robot uses a novel algorithm to minimize impact when the robot falls. The algorithm is not used for the robot on the bottom of the screen. The work is important as costly robots become more common in manufacturing. The skill becomes especially important, too, as robots are sought for healthcare or domestic tasks – working near the elderly, injured, children or pets. More information:

Building Tensile Structures with Flying Machines

31 October 2013

Building tensile structures with flying machines in the ETH Zurich Flying Machine Arena. The video shows quadrocopters assembling prototypical tensile structures. This is part of a body of research in aerial construction, a field that addresses the construction of structures with the aid of flying machines. The video demonstrates that flying machines are capable of autonomously spanning a rope between two support points. They can also create surface structures by using already placed ropes as new support points. Furthermore, multiple machines can work together thus extending the type of realizable structures. More information and related publications can be found on the project website: http://www.idsc.ethz.ch/research-dandrea/research-projects/aerial-construction.html * Researchers Federico Augugliaro, Ammar Mirjan, Fabio Gramazio, Matthias Kohler, and Raffaello D'Andrea Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control (IDSC), ETH Zurich, Switzerland Professorship for Architecture and Digital Fabrication, ETH Zurich, Switzerland * Music Aerial Alegretto, Weerthof - http://www.weerthof.com Used with kind permission of the composer. * Location ETH Zurich, Flying Machine Arena - http://www.FlyingMachineArena.org * Acknowledgments This work is supported by and builds upon prior contributions by numerous collaborators in the Flying Machine Arena project.
