On Thursday, Tesla is due to start a robotaxi service in Austin and Reuters has asked the city authorities to divulge two years of correspondence between the city and Tesla concerning the proposed rollout.

Tesla has objected to this arguing that to reveal the information would be to unfairly benefit its competitors in the driverless car business.

Historically, Tesla has been cautious about revealing data about its autonomous driving trials. Whereas other developers of driverless cars have submitted data about the number of untoward incidents per mile to the Californian Department of Motor Vehicles, Tesla has only submitted sporadic and limited data.

Although Tesla offers a ‘Full Self-Driving Option’ with its cars the option only delivers an ADAS Level 2 capability.

Elon has repeatedly said that Tesla cars would have driverless capability by the end of the year but the specific year has proved elusive.

The Attorney-General of Texas is deciding whether the city of Austin authorities have to comply with Reuters’ request or not.

In view of the spat between POTUS and Elon some bod from the White House may be phoning the Attorney-General to give him a nudge.
