The evaluation board can be used as a development tool for a rapidly expanding range of applications that includes asset management, vehicle tracking and navigation, and add-ons for PDAs.
The GPS-EVAL2R1 provides position, velocity and time information in a standard NMEA string format. The data is fed directly to a PC via an on-board standard RS-232 9-way D-type connector.
Evaluation software allows the display of a wide range of information including current location, real-time position plot, satellite locations and signal strength.
The board has eight pin headers that allow configuration and monitoring of the GPS module. Jumper link five enables the selection of either a 4,800 or 9,600-baud rate. The evaluation board has two LEDs – red to indicate whether or not GPS information is available, and green to indicate the availability of a valid almanac.
The evaluation board, which is fully compatible with a wide range of popular routing software including Microsoft Autoroute, has low power consumption and features an on-board regulator to allow the use of a DC power supply ranging from 3.5V to 15V.
The board is supplied with a GPS antenna, supporting software and RS-232 cable for connection to a PC.
