RANsemi launches O-RAN starter kit

RANsemi, the Bristol 5G O-RAN specialist, has brought out an O-RAN Starter Kit designed to enable out-of-the-box testing and accelerate the development of 5G RANs.

The end-to-end platform simplifies testing, fosters innovation, and shortens time-to-market for 5G RAN products.

The starter kit combines all the elements for an end-to-end 5G network from Core to UE, simplifying the task of developing O-RAN Radio Unit (RU) or Distributed Unit (DU) functionality.

RANsemi launches O-RAN starter kit

“With the launch of our 5G Open RAN Starter Kit, we are taking a significant step toward democratising 5G system development,” says RANsemi vp Oliver Davies, “it offers a fully configured, optimised private 5G network out-of-the-box, combining ease of use with powerful capabilities, allowing organisations to jumpstart their 5G projects for lab-based evaluation and system demonstrations without the typical complexity and time investment barriers.”

The kit is a compact O-RAN split 7.2 5G end-to-end system that enables customers to rapidly evaluate and deploy 3GPP 5G NR and O-RAN Alliance compliant systems. In addition to RANsemi SoCs and software, the platform features key components from industry-leading vendors, including SRS, Texas Instruments and iCana. The end-to-end platform meets the diverse needs of the 5G Open RAN small cell ecosystem yet allows companies to reconfigure and adapt it to their requirements.

The kit provides fully integrated and tested components in a band n78 O-RAN split 7.2 topology that includes a 5G SA Core, Centralised Unit (CU), Distributed Unit with RANsemi RNS802 5G High PHY SoC connected via an Open Fronthaul eCPRI link to the RANsemi Radio Demonstrator Board (RNS805RDB) with an RF interface allowing connection to commercial handsets or UE test equipment (a commercial handset and extra SIMs are provided with the kit). The kit ships complete with built-in GNSS and PTP synchronisation of all functional units.
