NFC development kit

For those who wonder if NFC could usefully add function to their products, STMicroelectronics has a neatly-packaged contactless near-field communication development kit with eight snap-out boards to offer a “large set of ready-to-use antenna configurations”, it said.

ST NFC eval kit

Built around the company’s 4 x 4mm ST25R200 NFC reader/writer IC, the boards within the kit, called STEVAL-25R200SA, plug together to create an ISO 14443A, ISO 14443B (NFC-A/B) and ISO15693 (NFC-V) compliant general-purpose NFC implementation that supports T1T, T2T, T4T and T5T tag types.

Programmable tags are included, and one or two antennas can be connected at once.

Control comes via an STM32 MCU on one of the boards, which comes with appropriate software tools.

NFC features include receiver noise suppression to allow use near LCD panels, for example, said ST. And towards consistent data exchanges, the 1.2W transmitter has dynamic output power control as well as over-shoot and under-shoot protection.

Operation is across 2.7 to 5.5V and -40 to +85°C.

Power saving modes include 1µA operation and 100nA reset – card detection wake-up can be implemented to reduce consumption.

Possible end-user applications for devices developed with the kit include device pairing, configuring setting or product authentication in industrial, consumer and medical environments, said ST.
