SuperH processor hits 400MHz

Renesas Technology Europe has unveiled the SH7780, a microprocessor combining the SuperH SH-4A processor core with a PCI-bus controller.

The device features a dedicated three-bus architecture and delivers 720Mips and 2.8Gflops at 400MHz, claimed the firm. The SH7780 can support speech recognition and speech synthesis without the need for external DSP.

The three external busses are a 32-bit double data rate-SDRAM bus at 160MHz (DDR-SDRAM320); a 32-bit bus for PCI-bus connections; and a 32-bit local bus at 100MHz for connecting to flash memory, SRAM, ATAPI and PCMCIA. All three can be operated simultaneously.

In addition, the device incorporates an on-chip floating point unit (FPU) with a maximum operating speed of 400MHz. It supports both single-precision and double-precision arithmetic operations and delivers a maximum processing performance of 2.8Gflops when operating in single-precision mode.

Four-way set-associative cache memory is divided into two 32kbyte areas, one for instructions and one for data. Cache hit ratio is improved compared to existing SH-4 products. The SH7780 also offers 16kbyte of on-chip high-speed RAM for real-time performance, to store exception handling routines, for example.

The on-chip PCI bus controller supports PCI Revision 2.2, allowing connections at either 66MHz or 33MHz.

Sample shipments of the SH7780 will begin in November 2004.
