Take a detailed look at Philips Lumiblade OLED lighting technology. We take a peek at some of the uses of the flexible, low heat-emitting OLED technology in the form of chandeliers, desktop lamps, art installations, and a comparison with fluorescent lighting...
LED Lighting
The latest Electronics Weekly product news on LED lighting (light-emitting diodes – a semiconductor light source).
AnalogicTech targets LED drivers for TV and monitor backlights
AnalogicTech is moving into LED drivers for TV and monitor backlights. The announcement comes just one day after market research firm DisplaySearchpredicted LEDs will have 56% of the backlight market in 2011, and 78% in 2015 - displacing incumbent fluorescent tubes.
Euro-sensor catches a million frames a second
A sensor which can detect a single photon at a million times a second has been produced by European researchers. The sensor enables the world's first 1024 pixel, photon-resolution, million-frame-per-second CMOS camera. One application is the recording of 'thought' processes travelling along neurons.
Dialight signs LED strobe lighting contract in US
Dialight has signed an agreement with a second major US telecom tower operator, for its LED white strobe technology. Initial shipments have started and the agreement will continue through to the end of 2010
Designer spectrum streetlights cut power and improve visibility
In a US trial, local drivers and pedestrians perceived better visibility, safety, security, brightness and colour-rendering when conventional 100W high-pressure sodium streetlights were replaced with 55W induction lamps.
Hull University spins out unique OLED technology for displays
The University of Hull has spun out Polar OLED, an OLED display firm which claims to have materials that allow significant cuts in display manufacturing costs. Its intellectual property is based around polymerisable liquid crystaline organic semiconductors, which are distinct from conventional small molecule and polymer OLED materials, company co-founder Professor Steve Kelly told Electronics Weekly.
NXP pushes LED driver lifetimes beyond 7,000 hours
With LED lighting offering the potential to be ten times more efficient than incandescents, manufacturers are commonly reporting lifetime figures exceeding 50,000 hours. As a result the issue of reliability shifts to the associated devices particularly the LED driver
Eye-safe laser rangefinder provides five measurements per second
Claimed to be eye-safe, this laser rangefinder module provides five measurements per second at distances of over 20km on a clear day. The laser is erbium glass, with diode laser pumping at 1.54µm, and the receiver is an InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD).
Thorn Lighting parent sets up OLED luminair company in Europe
A German-Austrian joint venture is to develop and produce OLED lighting in Dresden. Called Ledon OLED Lighting, the investors are Zumtobel Group of Austria, which owns UK firm Thorn Lighting; German applied research organisation Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft; and several employees its Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) research lab.
Osram stacks two die for 1W of infra red light from an LED
Osram has stacked two die to produce almost 1W of infra red light from an LED. The device is part of the firm's Platinum Dragon series, and has the same package so that existing designs can be used without modification.
