FASL eyes NAND flash

FASL, Fujitsu-AMD Semiconductor Ltd, the flash memory joint venture is looking at moving into the NAND market.

“Certainly there is a huge amount of market for NAND flash for storage. FASL is paying attention to the NAND market,” the chairman of FASL, Toshihiko Ono, told Electronics Weekly.

Asked if that meant FASL would produce a NAND flash product under the Spansion product brand name used by the joint venture, Ono replied: “There is such a possibility.”

Asked if FASL would enter the flash market with a partner or go alone, Ono replied: “Probably just FASL.”

In the NOR flash market Spansion is the market-leading brand, having knocked Intel into second place. Intel has said it won’t enter the NAND market.

A raft of new companies is lining up to enter the NAND business. Infineon Technologies and ST/Hynix put their first NAND flash products on the market earlier this year, and Powerchip Semiconductor of Taiwan is planning to enter the market later this year.
