Huawei tops WIPO filings

Huawei made more patent applications to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) last year, than any other organisation.

In fact Huawei holds the all-time record for patent applications to WIPO in any one year.

“It’s an all-time record by anyone,” says WIPO director general Francis Gurry.

Huawei made  5,405 patent applications to WIPO in 2018, up from 4,024 in 2017.

Just over half of all patent applications to WIPO last year – 50.5% – came from Asia.

“Historically, this is really quite extraordinary,”  said Gurry, “historically, this is a momentous occasion, this is something that is really a very, very significant result.”

The second most prolific applicant was Mitsubishi Electric with 2,812 filings and No.3 was Intel with 2,499.

53,345 filings came from China and 56,142 from the USA.

China is catching up with the US very fast, growing its applications by 9% last year  while the USA’s filings dipped 0.9%.
