Aimed at applications where power efficiency is essential, UFS 4.1 offers faster data access and improved performance, says the standards body. It also maintains hardware compatibility to UFS 4.0.
For example, it will be relevant for mobile applications and computing systems requiring high performance with low power consumption. This includes an expanding role in automotive applications and high-end IoT devices.
Note that JEDEC is also updating the complementary JESD223F UFS Host Controller Interface (UFSHCI) standard. Version 4.1 has also been published.
Version 4.1
Specifically, in version 4.1 are new mechanisms for optimising read traffic, allowing the host to maximise system throughput, and permanent Bootable Logical units.
There is also support for RPMB (Replay Protected Memory Block) Authentication, enhanced exception types and increased precision for enhanced memory logical Units
“Universal Flash Storage continues to be the industry’s leading solution for high-performance mobile storage,” said Mark Montierth, General Manager of the Mobile Business Unit at Micron Technology. “The collaboration of the mobile ecosystem to enable UFS 4.1 will accelerate the delivery of cutting-edge uses cases and on-device edge AI solutions to customers.”
For its part, Kioxia highlighted the role for automotive applications.
“Kioxia is very much delighted for the timely release of the UFS4.1 standard,” said Katsuki Matsudera. He is Senior Director of the Memory Division, at Kioxia Corporation. “We look forward to the widespread adoption of UFS4.1 JEDEC standard, especially in the fast-paced ever evolving mobile sector,”.
Universal Flash Storage
UFSHCI aims to provide a uniform interface for accessing the underlying UFS hardware capabilities.
This means that a standard driver can be provided for the Host Controller. Basically, the driver would work with a UFS host controller from any vendor.
You can download both standards – JESD220G (available for $423) and UFSHCI 4.1 ($220) – from the JEDEC website.
