TÜV SÜD supports industry 4.0 with UK IoT cellular test service

Technical service provider, TÜV SÜD, has launched its IoT cellular testing service. The service will be accommodated within the existing facility, claimed to be the only laboratory in the UK to offer a dedicated Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) test and certification service.

Explaining the rationale for the service, TÜV SÜD explained that NB-IoT enables multiple machines, devices and services to be connected inexpensively and energy-efficiently to optimise battery life.

The service performs regulatory testing against international and country-specific mandatory requirements, to meet the demanding test requirements, changing regulatory needs and country-specific requirements.


The German test, product certification and training services company employs over 600 staff in the UK and current engineers will provide this service for industry 4.0 manufacturing. Service include advice on the use of a chipset or network technology for a particular industry or geographical region.


Phil Evans, business line manager for telecoms at TÜV SÜD, said: “The question for [industy IoT] technology developers is how to meet regulatory requirements and effectively deal with congestion on the radio spectrum to deliver streamlined communications.”

In addition to e NB-IoT testing, the company supports cellular applications using LTE Cat.M, which enables devices to connect directly to a 4G network.

The IoT cellular testing service is live now.
