Nanocrystalline cores shrink common-mode inductors

Chemi-Con has introduced nanocrystalline core ac and dc common-mode inductors to improve upon the size of its existing FL-V series, calling the new parts the FW series.

“The material’s high magnetic permeability reduces the core volume and the number of copper wire turns needed to achieve a design,” claimed distributor TTI IP&E, which is stocking the parts. “Compared to FL-V coils, the magnetic permeability of the FW series at 10kHz has improved by approximately 150% from 3.2 to 37.1mH. Additionally, impedance at 150kHz to 1MHz has improved.”

Single-phase (two-coil, right) versions span ratings of 250V to 600V, and 7A to 36A, in sizes from 29  x 31 x 21mm to 53 x 60 x 39mm – both current and voltage ratings increase together at size increases.

Inductances span 3.2 to 37.1mH (10kHz) through the range. Measured at 100kHz this span is 1 to 11.5mH.

DC resistances are between 1.8 and 26mΩ.

TTI Chemi-Con FW inductors Choke Coi 1Three-phase (three coil, left) versions are all rated at 500V.

These span 10A to 50A and 42 x 42 x 28mm to 65 x 65 x 35mm.

10kHz inductances vary across 3.2 to 20.7mH, which changes to 1 to 6.4mH at 100kHz.

DC resistances are between 1.2 and 13mΩ.

Curie temperature is 570°C, and operation is over -40 to +130°C. They have UL 94V-0 Type B (+130°C) flammability and insulation rating, and AEC-Q200 compliance – although to this last compliance TTI added the caveat “some specifications are subject to change without notice” – Electronics Weekly has asked why – watch this space for an answer.

“You could exchange two conventional ferrite coils with one FW series nanocrystalline coil of the same size,” claimed TTI director Dermot Byrne.

TTI sees the inductors being used in medical equipment, communication base stations and industrial equipment.

TTI has picked LDFW007652Y6-V0E as an example – this is single-phase,  6.5mH, 7A, 250Vdc and 29 x 31 x 21mm.

For a view across all the FW coils, scroll to catalogue page 117 (sngle-phase) and 121 (three-phase) of this Chemi-Con pdf, which is effectively the data sheet. The same document covers the FL-V series (single-phase page 126, three-phase page 132) so you can check the claims made above if this is important to you.

Just the next day, TDK introduced a range of surface-mount common-mode chokes rated at up to 36A
