Chips Act a “horrible, horrible thing”, says Trump

The US Chips Act is under threat following President Trump’s speech to the US Congress when he called the Act a “horrible, horrible thing”.

Trump asked Congress to get rid of the Act and use “whatever is left over” of its funds to “reduce debt or any other reason.”

Chips Act a “horrible, horrible thing”, says TrumpTrump thinks tariffs are a better way to go to support domestic chip-making and says tariffs were the motivation behind TSMC’s announcement last week that it would spend $100 billion on three new advanced fabs in Arizona.

“We’re giving them no money,” said Trump, “all that was important to them was they didn’t want to pay the tariffs.”

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that the new TSMC investments which include three fabs, an R&D hub and a packaging platform, won’t get federal funds.

TSMC has had $6.6 billion of grants plus 25% tax credit on capital additions plus a $5 billion government loan facility approved for the initial three fabs it announced in Arizona.
