Intel to close auto chip unit

Intel is to close its automotive chip unit and lay off ‘most’ of its employees.

The unit operates out of Munich and designs chips for infotainment, vehicle controls, and software-defined vehicles.

The decision does not affect Mobileye, the Israeli autonomous driving company  which Intel bought for $15.3 billion in 2017 and holds an 88% stake.

Intel has already decided to close its marketing unit and outsource its functions to Accenture the business consultancy firm.

The unit which gave the world ‘Operation Crush’ and ‘Intel Inside’ and made Intel a by-word for marketing chutzpah has struggled during Intel’s decline as a process technology leader.
